Woody Allen’s ‘The Kugelmass Episode’ Comes on Stage

A live performance of the Woody Allen short story The Kugelmass Episode, presented by the Word for Word Performing Arts Company, comes to San Francisco Thursday, May 24, 2012.

City Arts & Lectures hosts the authorized adaptation of the work to the stage. Published in the New Yorker in 1977,  The Kugelmass Episode follows the antics of Kugelmass, a humanities professor at City College.

Dissatisfied with his second marriage, Kugelmass desires to have an affair. A magician named Persky from Brooklyn shows him his magic cabinent that can transport him into any novel.

Kugelmass chooses Madame Bovary and has an affair with Frenchwoman Emma Bovary in a droll take on reader-response theory.
