Global Meets Local in the Work of Tomokazu Matsuyama

Posted by Zane Johnston on Apr 25, 2012 | Comments (0)

Artist Tomokazu Matsuyama presents a new solo exhibition at the Frey Norris gallery starting May 3, 2012.

The Future Is Always Bright 2010 Mixed Media on canvas 72 x 200 in 183 x 508 cm

Matsuyama explores the mingling of the local with the global, a trend that has accelerated in recent years by the proliferation of communication technologies, resulting in a cultural amalgamation and mishmash of competing ideas.

The Future is Always Bright features a collection of Matsuyama’s paintings, sculptures and installations of amorphous shapes that merge with the architecture of the gallery.

In the title work, Matsuyama uses the carp and the tortoise, traditional symbols connected with affluence, prosperity and good fortune in Japanese folklore and mythology.

The exhibition opens May 3 from 5pm to 8pm.
