Happy Birthday, Frida!

Prolific folk  artist Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacan, Mexico on July 6th, 1907. Best known for the self-portraits that dominated her body of work, she endured a series of health problems throughout her life.

She was diagnosed with polio at the age of 6 and later survived a seriously debilitating accident that left her in a body cast for three months. During that time she began to paint, mostly to occupy her time, and the rest is history.

Local connection: Frida Kahlo made her public art debut at Sixth Annual Exhibition of the San Francisco Society of Women Artists in 1931 with her painting Frida and Diego Rivera.
